Genetic discovery that could help in treatments for mental disorders

The main topic of many studies is better understanding of the way the brain works. He is so complex that he needed an international team of 60 researchers and experts who were part of the consortium for Cognitive Genomics (COGENT) to "unlock" several genes involved in the cognitive ability.

An international team led by Todd Lentz of Fajnshtajnoviot Institute for Medical Research, studied the genes of 35,000 people, measuring the brain function of the participants through tests related to learning, memory and other components of cognitive function.

They were able to discover new genetic variations associated with cognitive ability of the brain, researchers in the future will help them better understand how the brain works at the molecular level.

Researchers from COGENT also found molecular genetic overlap between cognitive ability and personality characteristics - that genetic predisposition to higher cognitive ability were associated with greater "openness to new experiences." In other words, some of the genes that make a person poljubopitna to new ideas and experiences, the same ones that enhance cognitive performance.

Researchers hope that these new discoveries will contribute to new and better treatments for disorders of the brain such as schizophrenia syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and a better understanding of Parkinson's or Alzheimer's.

COGENT already working with European partners to expand their team in order to engage in the study more than 100,000 DNA samples.
